SCENE SIX

Wertheim’s room, night. Someone is rummaging through a bag.

WERTHEIM: Is someone there?

I can hear you. I can hear you breathing. So just… if you’re here to spy on me or to kill me or—I guess you would have done that by now. If you’re an elite killer. An assassin. Or a mercenary.

The person moves.

I’m standing in front of the door so you won’t be able to get out.

AMSEL: Fuck.

WERTHEIM: Sofie?

AMSEL: Um… yes, actually. Hello, Johann.

WERTHEIM turns on the light.

Surprise.

WERTHEIM: What are you doing here?

AMSEL: I couldn’t let you do it alone, Johann, I just couldn’t! I know you didn’t want me to come but I kept thinking about those poor rabbits and I just—I had to!

WERTHEIM: What are you doing in my room?

AMSEL: I didn’t have anywhere to stay. It’s not like I know anyone in North Korea, Johann, and I spent all my money trying to get here.

WERTHEIM: How did you get into the country?

AMSEL: I flew into China, got myself to Shenyang, bribed the staff at the North Korean consulate, officials both sides of the border, got across the border and here I am. I got to Pyongyang in the back of a truck full of chickens. I stink of shit and I’m terrified I’ve got lice. Can I use your shower?

WERTHEIM: What have you got behind your back?

AMSEL: Oh, this? I knocked over your bag, I was just putting it back on your desk. Sorry. I think I spilt some of your papers.

WERTHEIM: How did you get into my room?

AMSEL: The door was open.

WERTHEIM: But I made sure to—

AMSEL: Johann, I’ve come all this way, please, I’m exhausted. Can we talk about this in the morning?

WERTHEIM: I’m meant to be here alone.

AMSEL: No-one saw me.

WERTHEIM: I won’t be able to hide you. The room is probably bugged! If they find you—it’s both our necks on the line, Sofie!

AMSEL: I thought you’d be glad to see me. I came all this way to help you, Johann.

WERTHEIM: You’ve put us both in very serious danger, Sofie.

AMSEL: Johann, you’re in the most unscrupulous and volatile dictatorship in the world, you were already in danger, I really don’t see that this adds much to it. Maybe I’ll even be able to help you.

WERTHEIM: How?

AMSEL: I know where they’re keeping Felix.

WERTHEIM: What use is that?

AMSEL: How will we rescue him if we don’t know where he is?

WERTHEIM: I’m not going to steal Felix, Sofie. Now that I’m here, perhaps I can make some good from this situation. Maybe Chung was a bit of a loose cannon, but the person I’m speaking to now, Park, seems very helpful and genuine. They’ve said I can be a part of setting up the breeding program here. I’m going to check on the rabbits tomorrow, and believe me, if things aren’t up to scratch I’m taking my rabbits and going straight home. But if it comes to that, I’m going to buy them back.

AMSEL: Do you really think they’re going to sell? Really, deep down,
